How much is an old photo worth, and how long IS a piece of string??

These two questions go hand in hand although the latter seems to be an easier one to answer.

I buy and sell old photos and postcards for a living, that’s a full-time living, with kids, a dog, a ridiculously high electricity bill, the whole package, so I need to have a fair idea of what I’m buying to keep my ‘dealers’ badge rather than become a full time collector with expensive taste!  I buy my photos the old fashioned way, by door knocking established areas and simply asking to purchase old albums and odd black and white photos. To most people, this may seem a little daunting, but let me assure you, it’s easy and most of the time, fun.  It’s always nice to see the change of expression on people’s faces when you tell them you’re not selling anything….you’re BUYING!

Rhine II
Let’s get the juices flowing first. The most expensive photo ever sold is Andreas Gursky's Rhine II, a simple (and I do stress SIMPLE) photo of a bit of water, a band of sky and some thin strips of grass (just saying it how it is), it fetched $4.3 million dollars on November the 11th 2011. The next most expensive photo was a self portrait by Cindy Sherman as a younger girl lying on a tiled floor (I’m trying hard not to be cynical ), it fetched $3.89 million dollars in May 2011. Now I can continue down the list, but you can tell we are talking about art, not so much the photo.
Billy the Kid
However, in 6th place on the all time expensive list is a rather weathered snap of Billy the Kid, the famous American outlaw, this managed a modest $2.3 million also in 2011. This photo is what I term ‘real’, not artistic for arts sake, but historical, topical and not stylised.  I can hear you saying the likely hood of finding photos like these amongst someone’s albums is nil. As for the artsy stuff, I have to agree, but as far as images of famous historical people, or images of historical importance, the odds are higher than you think.

Ebay has been the go to hub of collectors for years now.  With a few short clicks a wealth of information is paraded past you giving you a sense of ‘know it all’ power, having the value of nearly everything at your finger tips.  In December 2011, an album containing snaps of Military China sold for more than $6600, and another Chinese album for $6400.  An Egyptian album went for $5000, $3000 for photos of dental equipment!!  I myself recently sold an album of WW1 snaps for a little over $1600. This is only within the last month, and I haven’t even started on the signed portraits. I bought an album last year and found 3 old gentlemen from the early 1900’s all signed at the bottom, a little research later and I realised I was looking at 3 Australian Prime Ministers. A few years ago I had the privilege of selling one of my photos to a Texas museum after uncovering the man in question was in fact Buffalo Bill Cody.
Buffalo Bill Cody

Now be assured, it’s not all diamonds and hot meals, there’s alot of ‘stuff’ you have to wade through to discover the gems, but even in the most mundane of photos, there’s a collector with an interest. Who would of thought that pictures of men with beards, tricycles, fishing rods, aeroplanes, cows, beach gymnastics, would all have a dollar value. CDV (Carte de Visite) albums are fascinating. French for Visiting Card, these types of photos were predominately portraits and ranged from approx. 1854 through to 1890. They were an albumen print which means egg whites were used in the developing (reason why most turn yellow with age) with the image attached to a stiff card back often with the studio’s name printed at the bottom.  Here amongst the small pocket sized images you will find mostly family shots, but also some very (expensive) famous people, as the card was often replicated and sold on as either a business card or advertisement. People of notoriety have a habit of wanting to be remembered, so not many shied away from this new technology that promised them eternity. From about 1875 till 1905 Cabinet cards were very popular. Similar to CDV’s, they were larger in size and are found to have more landscape images on them, as the camera was evolving and making it’s way outdoors.

Gold Miners 1880
In this era just before the turn of the century, virtually all these types of photos will have a good dollar value, but the best of them can skyrocket. As you flip through hundreds of images you will start to notice the ones that stand out a little more, people with a uniform, a penny farthing bike, a shot of a grocery store, or an official gathering. Remember that photos at this time were the domain of the wealthy and not as common as the family album of today. For the average in this category each photo will be worth approximately $1-$5, the stand outs should get between $40 - $100, with some research and as much information as possible, a good photo card normally fetches between $100 - $500.

The invention of the Box Brownie ( you push the button, we do the rest ) by Kodak revolutionised the world of photography when it was invented just after 1900 and sold on mass around 1920. Now one in every three homes had access to a camera, and as with all new technology, everyone was excited and eager to push the boundaries. We had an insight into war like never before. It’s these early, sometimes grainy shots of action in the trenches that still fascinate the collectors today. Small ‘field’ photos average between $10 - $100 depending on the level of action.
Landing at Anzac Cove
Group photos of Battalions (often printed on postcards) should get between $20 - $120 depending on the level of action the soldiers had seen (e.g. Australian 10th battalion landing at Gallipoli). It’s not uncommon to find small albums containing one man’s journey through WW1, these along with any supporting paraphernalia that creates a ‘package’ often get the best prices, average $200 - $2000.

As industry booms, the record of every new invention becomes a legacy that needs to be captured on film. Popular photos from the 1920’s to the 1950’s include; Trains, buses, aeroplanes, ships, buildings, bridges, factories, and even movie theatres. Anything that will announce to the world  ‘How great is man’s creation’. It’s not yet the place for natural, artistic landscapes. It does however include ‘landmarks’, that people are seeing for the first time with the luxury of fast, economical world travel. The Eiffel Tower, the Pyramids, the Suez Canal are just a few of the more common shots I come across. All of these original snaps have value, starting from around $3-$5 each to mega bucks if you own a photo of something world renown that no longer can be photographed, e.g. The Titanic (launching photo sold recently $2750), The Hindenburg in flight ($1100) and so on. Sport is another huge arena when it comes to pricey photos. The likes of Babe Ruth, Bobby Jones, and of course ‘our Don Bradman’ even in a candid pose can bring anywhere from $100 upward, and a good majority can be found signed, which will just make the image skyrocket!
Don Bradman Invincibles

Always remember one golden rule. Only buy original photo’s or slide’s! Copies, reprints, book images, calendar shots, and newspaper images are, in nearly all circumstances (rare exceptions) are worthless.

So if you are buying to sell, be wary and in the beginning, be cheap. Get to know your buyers and the things that make them go Mmmm. If you are a collector, always pick a genre that appeals to you, something fun. It’s great to learn more about a topic with the aid of great photos. Ultimately, like all keen collectors, you will also become the teacher, and pass on your knowledge to others of like mind.
“Do something you love, and the money will come”

By the way, for those still wrestling with the latter question. A piece of string is defined as being long enough to use on a small task but not long enough to have an excess amount left over, this worldly measurement comes in at 47 centimetres !!

  9. G'day,

Daguerreotypes of this size normally sell for US$20-$60. Yours has a swatch of hair that normally is attributed to the persons passing, or a photo for a Funeral, this would increase the price marginally.
If the photo is of someone of notoriety, in a uniform, in an unusual pose, with an unusual prop, the price can increase dramatically (up to and over US$1000).
Check Ebay 'completed items' for a more visual reference.
    Hope this helps.

  10. Thanks for the article! Good information. A friend of mine has original photos of the Hearst family taken by their family photographer. One of the photos has Hillary Clinton in it. Any idea what they could be worth or who would be interested in buying them? My friend is in a situation in which she could really use the money. Your guidance would be appreciated.

    1. If you're talking about the Hearst Media Corporation family, then the photos would definitely have some value.
A look into the lives of the wealthy or of celebrity status always has collectors with an inquisitive interest reaching deep into their pockets.
It would all depend on the nature of the photos, and of course, the 'right' to the photos e.g have the been given permission and ownership to do what they want with them depending on the age and sensitivity of the images.
Best to seek out the advice of a good antique dealer or Broker that deals in Ephemera.
Normal unsigned Clinton photos go for only $10-$20. Candid photos always sell for more.
Probably not the detail you were hoping for, it's a bit hard without seeing them.
      Best of luck.

    1. G'day Daniel,

This sort of collection has a very high value, not just because of the nature of the photos, but because of the provinance along with supporting paper items.
Obviously one off photos of Football teams, Frat houses and the like will have collectors eager to buy.
If you have the time to research the pieces, divide the lot into Family groups and write a detailed description, then Ebay may be your best bet. Include lots of images with watermarks (so no one just copies them from the Ebay site).
To get a second opinion, have a different avenue of sale, or to get an idea of value (as sight of these items would help greatly), search out a local or City Auction house that has success in selling Ephemera, and get them to give you an estimate/appraisal (free).
Sounds like a great lot, and if it's not sentimental to you, may make a fantastic Xmas holiday!
      All the best.

Best sold as one lot. If you can wait for the next Olympics to come around, Ebay the lot then, lots of interest brings a premium.
If you cant wait, separate the photos and tickets, and sell one by one on Ebay.
You might get a real suprise if they are all indeed originals.

    3. A bit hard to be accurate without seeing them. If they are indeed original, any early photos of Civil works would be sought after in the area they were taken. Given the size of them I'd say between US$25-50 each.
The JFK ones are a bit tricky. They could be sample shots of Publication photos.
They are dime a dozen ($5-$10 each) unless they are someones personal shots which can bring $50 to $100 each depending on the uniqueness of the subject.
Best run them by a local auction house that deals in Ephemera just to make sure.
      Hope this helps.

As with most photo values, the provinence or story behind them helps to verify what they're worth.
How did you come by them, and how did the Henry Ford Historical society know you have them?

I normally only deal in photos. You either have an incredibly expensive collection of original paintings, or pretty common prints, which unfortunately are not worth a great deal.
That saying, if they are nicely framed, a local auction house would be your best bet.

  28. Hi Sherry,

Pictures of people, unless of notoriety, don't hold a great deal of value. Some will collect them for the period costume, but the value here would be to do with the photographer "Krieghoff".
I believe he is the son of a very famous painter that moved to Canada in the mid 1800's.

Anything crime related has a great collectability.
Given the rough estimate of the year this would have been taken, you either have a CDV (small) or Cabinet Card (large).
CDV would sell for around $100-120, Cabinet Card $150-190, possibly a bit more depending on the quality of image.

If so, these would be highly prized and would probably end up alongside the Ship in Dundee Scotland.
Good clear images, with strong subject matter depending on their size have in the past fetched upward of US$300-500 each.
As a collection and with provable provinance, I would say your looking around $20000-$30000 given some images would be of poor quality.
Is it possible to see one of the images and the handwriting on the back?

  47. I have some old Russian photos: before revolution, it's marked 1908, then after revolution 1918, the same person pictured in GULAG ( he worked for the NKVD) then him in Berlin. I also have some post cards Stalin's time. All are originals with authentic writing. Where can I sell them? Please, let me know if you have any ideas or want them. Pictures are in good condition. My email is lhorback@gmail.com

  49. Wow - glad to find this website. My aunt was in a few movies in the 20's and 30's but her big connection to Hollywood and the social scene was that she was married to director Eddie Sutherland (WC Fields, etc). She had a large personal collection of celebrity photos, all are vintage. Some candids at Hollywood party's, studio promo shots, press releases, professional portraits, 'on set' studio pix, etc. Some are signed. The 'bigger' stars are easily identified (Lila Lee, Lon Chaney, Dennis O'Keefe, Colette Lyons, Cary Grant, Douglas Fairbanks, etc), but I'm having trouble with some of the others. Any suggestions or direction for assistance in putting names to these faces and to establish a value of the collection? -- who buys them? They're in great condition (considering some are likely close to 90 years old !!), she had them in her albums so some have the little black mounting corners still attached. Appreciate any feedback !

  60. I have two old photo albums that I bought in France about 20 years ago. One album - cardboard cover - is a family's vacation trip to the Loire Valley & aix en Province in the 1960's. Also contains some photos of Paris - Notre dame &c. Little square 3" x 3" B&W photos
the other is a leather bound album or a young man incl shots from his military life, and a vacation in what looks like Marseilles - the bathing suits suggest the 60's. Stuck in back are a couple of formal wedding shots in cardboard protectors from a photo studio in Algiers. What's the best place to sell them? How much are they worth. I think I paid about $15 a piece for them.

  63. hi there I'm Mario I need some advice, I have had in my possession a very large family estate photo collection that I came across at a sale. In this huge lot there was everything I needed to start a geneology family tree, there are about six five year diaries that date back to the early 1930s 5 of those were written by one woman, another by her dad this one is written in the late 1800s. There are a lot of different types of pictures CDV cabinet photos some with names on the back and through Ancestry.com I was able to find out who they were. Puzzliing this family was a lot of fun and now I would like to sell it but do you think its worth more as a lot as in everything together? or selling photo at a time? keep in mind that there are hundreds of pictures, letters, cabinet cdv, old old film, snapshots, postcards, diaries, receipts, obituaries, original newspapers with updates on the war WWII, college diarie/scrapbooks, class pictures when only 7 people graduated from 1897, many different class pictures and time periods mid 1800s-1960s. So back to the original ?? selling as a whole lot or by piece?

  77. My Mother in law (deceased) collected old photos mostly babies, children, families, young people, and ladies. A few have turned yellowish, but most are still clear black and white. From the clothes I'd say late 19th century to WWI. There are a few farm scenes, etc., but most are posed people. All togther there are 45 photos of various sizes. One of the scenes shows what appears to be a badly listing ship at the end of a long pier. Four of the photos appear to be of Rosa and Samuel from the same family taken by. C. Ruf, Basel. We'd like to sell these. Some are quite extraordinary in the dress and pose. Anyone interested can contact me, Richard Blue at richardblue@earthlink.net. Request to be removed from spam.
